I knew when I first read an article called “Every Mother’s Son” on the Peace Journalism website a week ago today, that the story would snowball in no time. Now you can’t help but find Cindy Sheehan on CNN, BBC, all over. As of this posting, it’s the #1 search on Technorati.
I am constantly amazed by technology, even today. Or should I say, especially today. I grew up playing Sim City and Oregon Trail on a Macintosh Performa 450, using Compuserve with our blazing fast 14.4 baud modem. I grew up with a mouse in my hand, typing 40wpm before I could do algebra and just when I think I’m used to it and the power it has given to people, something else blows my mind. This woman has been there for hardly a week and already the whole world knows about it and many *[seemingly] average citizens* are on their way to join her. Thousands, probably millions more are supporting her in other unseen ways. This velocity couldn’t happen for Vietnam because they didn’t have email lists and blogs and text messaging and all these forms of communication that one way or another move text around the world and manage to spread opinions like wildfire. Now we have the power to find out for ourselves that millions of us feel the same way about this war. Isolation is a thing of the past. It’s time for us to move away from the fascination and awe and adapt to this new tool and use it to better our world as much as possible.
This is what we needed, and it’s so simple. It is usually the simplest actions that stir up the most change. Leave it to a mother to have the answer, they always do.
Today there are solidarity rallies going on across the country to support Cindy and the anti-war cause. I’ll be there, hope to see you there.
