C-SPAN airing 9/11 Truth Forum tomorrow at 6:10pm EDT

Was 9/11 an inside job? Watch C-SPAN tomorrow evening to get more information on the 9/11 Truth movement and the theories that are quickly gaining support.

9/11 Truth on C-SPAN

Tomorrow at 6:10pm C-SPAN will be rebroadcasting a forum discussion from a recent two-day event, “American Scholars Symposium: 9/11 and The Neo-Con Agenda,” that was held in the ballroom of the Sheraton Los Angeles.

The panelists talked about the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Among the issues they addressed were various theories concerning the origins of the attacks, charges of a government and media cover-up of key facts, the results of investigations into the attacks, and public perceptions of the events.

Participants also called on citizens to question official versions of the terrorist attacks, examine independent sources of information, and conduct grassroots education campaigns to change public opinion. Following their presentations they answered questions from the audience.

“The 90 minute discussion is wide ranging and insightful, with each participant providing his unique perspective and interpretation. From the soft spoken physics professor who has analyzed samples of the molten metal from the buildings and found traces of the explosives used to bring them down, to the passionate professor Fetzer, who excoriates the NY Times for failing to uncover the crime of the century, committed just blocks from their own headquarters. Lt. Col Bowman, who flew over 100 combat missions in Vietnam, points out that, had normal air defense procedures been in effect that day, the hijacked planes would have been intercepted and the buildings would never have been hit. Webster Tarpley outlines, based on his study of false-flag terrorism, the type of criminal intelligence agency network that was in operation that day.

The picture they paint of an America attacked, not from outside, but by a criminal network of moles within our own government, is as compelling as it is frightening.”

Thank goodness it’s being replayed because I totally missed it the first time. I’m so glad the alternate 9/11 theories are finally getting some attention. Thank you C-SPAN!

Wi-fi for the world?

Tracking the FON process:

  • Tuesday, June 26th: Ordered FON Social Router for $5 (+$8 shipping) Since it looks like at least 8,000 people have registered just today, I’m not holding my breath for fast delivery. But we’ll see…
  • Approx. 3 weeks later I got the router in the mail. Unfortunately I don’t remember the exact date. However I do know it was a little more than 3 weeks after I ordered it, so their estimate of a 3-5 week delivery time was right.
  • I hooked it up to my cable modem and the laptop running Ubuntu immediately recognized the signal and connected (using a Linksys wireless card.) I was able to register the router and use the connection just fine. Too bad it would only get more difficult from then on.
  • My PowerMac G4 would not configure the router. I had it plugged in to one of the 4 available wired ports and it just wouldn’t recognize it. I tried every one of the Network settings, reset the modem countless times, posted my problem on the FON message board, still nothing. To make matters worse, shortly after I upgraded my laptop from Ubuntu 5.10 to 6.6 the wireless card stopped working. So until that’s fixed I don’t even have a need for the router.
  • I sent an email to FON Support ten days ago and have yet to hear back from anyone. Apparently Linksys has great tech support, but since the FON router has FON firmware on it I have to use FON’s support. So basically right now my FON router is a paperweight.
  • My verdict: FON has the right idea, but unless you have a mainstream machine (PC running Windows XP), I’d be hesitant. Well, I guess if you’re a network technician and wouldn’t have to rely on FON Support you might be able to figure it out. But since I’m definitely not a network tech. and my situation involves Mac and Ubuntu machines, I’m completely out of luck. I knew I should wait before I got my hopes up :-/
  • If anything, this adventure has served as yet another example of how far the tech world still has to come before it can claim to be user-friendly to people other than Windows PC users. If you have a Mac or Linux, good luck fending for yourself!

Original Post:

FON logoThis afternoon I was directed via a BBC article to FON’s website. What is FON?

FON is a Global Community of people who share WiFi. Join FON, share excess bandwidth at home and roam the world for free.

Believers in open-source technology (like myself) love the idea, others wouldn’t even think of sharing the connection they pay so much for. To each their own, if you don’t like sharing, stay away from this.

How does it work?

There are of course more details, but here are the basics:

  • You pay $5 for their “Social Router” which is just a Linksys wireless router with FON firmware installed
  • Register it on their network so you get added to the hotspot map
  • Share your access with other FON members
  • In exchange you have access to the whole FON network

So in theory you could wander around the globe with your laptop (or any wireless device, like a Blackberry ::drool::) and be connected everywhere there’s an FON hotspot. This could be really cool, assuming the worldwide wi-fi network is actually built.

Okay so I’ll be honest, it wasn’t the idealistic goal of worldwide wi-fi that caught my attention. It was the $5 Linksys wireless router. I mean I was eventually going to buy one anyway, why not try this one? And if I’d help build a worldwide wi-fi network at the same time, good deal.

I’m all about expanding technology access to the general public, especially the people who can’t really afford a $40/mo. broadband subscription. Which is basically most people who don’t live in the suburbs. Now you may be thinking, is broadband really necessary to survive? No, of course not. But try and think of everything you use it for on a daily basis and how that connection could enhance the quality of life and opportunities for a lower-income household (job search, continuing education, etc.) Okay I’m getting off topic, this is a new post in itself…

There are lots of questions and criticisms people have about FON’s endeavor, including the legality of sharing your ISP service, the safety of opening up your connection, etc. Most questions and concerns are addressed on the FON website and various online forums so I’m not going to go into that.

The documentarian that I am, I’ve decided to track this whole process, to see if the dream really pans out in the real world. The BBC article says that the project is backed by Google and Skype, so it would seem the odds are good.

You were such a good boy! Your brother Alan and I will miss you.

Why are gas prices so high?

So the giant oil companies can get richer and richer, day by day, gallon by gallon. And here’s the latest proof:

1) Shell has just posted a 36% jump in quarterly profits, earning $6.3 BILLION in the last three months.

2) Meanwhile, Exxon Mobile also just posted a 36% increase in quarterly profits. They made $10.3 BILLION in the past three months.

How long is this going to go on before the people of this country demand an end to the oil corporations gauging us with absolutely no consequences?

Do you really think they’re taking these record high earnings and investing them in renewable energy technology research? Hell no, why in the world would they ever want that?

We sure as hell know our government isn’t going to step up and do anything about this since their campaign funds are the ones who profit from quarters like these. To date Exxon Mobile has given 87% of their political contributions to the Republican party. In 2006, the Oil and Gas industry as a whole has given 83% of their political donations to Republicans. You don’t have to look hard for the connection.

Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center movie

The World Trade Center movie, profiting from tragedy

Does anybody else think it’s sick that Paramount Pictures is getting ready to make huge profits off the events of 9/11?

I can’t say I’m surprised, I was actually anticipating a movie to come sooner than this. Of course I have to wonder if the timing is intentional. Why? So we can all be reminded of when those evil-doer terrorists attacked us (or was it our own government?) and how we should live in fear and vote Republican.

I hope I come to find out that I’m wrong and that a significant portion of the movie’s profits will go towards the families of those killed on 9/11. Otherwise I can see no way to justify this. It’s one thing to do a documentary (and for the record, 60% of the profits from Fahrenheit 9/11 went to charity), but this movie looks like sheer exploitation for entertainment purposes. And yes, I’m making claims without actually having seen the movie. This is the best I can do because I refuse to ever see it.

The movie follows the true story of two police officers who died in the collapse. Jeanette Pezzulo, the widow of Port Authority police officer Dominick Pezzulo (who is played by Jay Hernandez in the film), has expressed anger with the film. She’s quoted as saying:

“My thing is: this man died for you. How do you do this to this family?”

Obviously the movie industry is deperate for new ideas, the constant barrage of sequels and copycat plots is proof of that. But why don’t they hire some unemployed college graduates with creative writing degrees to come up with something that won’t exploit victims of tragedy?

I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this. Some quick Googling revealed to me that (big surprise) Viacom (which owns Paramount Pictures) is indeed just another mainstream media puppet for the Bush Administration.

The Chairman and Chief Executive of Viacom is Sumner Redstone. And though he claims to be a liberal Democrat, he said this regarding the 2004 Presidential election:

“I don’t want to denigrate Kerry, but from a Viacom standpoint, the election of a Republican administration is a better deal. Because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on. The Democrats are not bad people. …But from a Viacom standpoint, we believe the election of a Republican administration is better for our company.”

So of course it makes sense for Viacom to produce a movie like this in the hopes of our renewed sadness leading to the return of a life lived in fear. Right before the November elections.

Remember 9/11. Be afraid. Vote Republican.

07/27/06 Update: Looks like Oliver Stone is going to donate 10% of the film’s opening weekend proceeds to charity. Note the “opening weekend” part. What a way to pay your respects to the widows and families, only taking 90% of the first weekend’s sales and 100% of the profit after that.

08/10/06 Update: There are some interesting reviews and blog entries surfacing about the movie: AlterNet’s review and a New Yorker’s perspective.

Iraq War fatalities data visualization

Today’s number is 2,567. Can you wrap your head around that number?

Iraq war fatalities data visualization

Through infosthetics.com I found this animated visualization simulating the US & coalition military fatalities that occured in Iraq.

The flash animation runs at 10 frames per second, one frame for each day, with data taken from icasualties.org. You basically watch the country explode and hear the lives lost, day by day. Be sure to click on About This Project to read the Intro, Methodology, and Conclusion.

Also of interest, a Calendar of the U.S. Military Dead. A coffin icon for each soldier lost on that day.

Recap of Fitrakis speech @ Community Leadership Forum

Wednesday night I attended the Community Leadership Forum at the Unitarian Universalist Church to hear independent candidate for Ohio Governor Bob Fitrakis speak. He was to address the issue of Green Party candidates being considered “spoilers” for elections and also explain why he was running for Governor.

This was my first time listening to Fitrakis speak and I was able to validate my assumption that the guy has to be hands down the #1 source of knowledge when it comes to Ohio electoral corruption.

His mind is an overflowing pool of statistics, I don’t know how he keeps all the numbers straight. You could probably name one of Ohio’s 88 counties and he could give you the percentage of Democrat and Republican votes (real vs. stolen), the number of precincts, voting machines, absentee ballots filed, etc.

He also has an impressive knowledge of the tangled web that is our political/corporate world. Again, you could probably name any elected official and he could tell you what corporations pull that person’s strings, how much money they launder into their campaign funds, how they’re tied to Karl Rove, etc.

Also his ability to form complete sentences and speak directly from his own thoughts instead of reading from a prepared speech was impressive, since our pretend President is not capable of this. And he did a Question & Answer session at the end without requiring all the questions to be submitted in advance. Imagine that!

He started out his speech by saying the latest poll numbers he’s received have him at 1 percent of the vote, so the fact that people are considering him a threat to Strickland is amusing and flattering.

I have to agree with this, if Strickland loses the vote by 1%, people will probably go crazy and say the votes he needed in order to win went to Fitrakis.

Instead of blaming the third party candidate, people should evaluate what Strickland was lacking as a candidate that made him fail to obtain an overwhelming majority. It wouldn’t be because there was a third candidate. Republicrats can claim their differences but in many ways they’re one in the same, which is why people are looking to other parties for candidates. We’re sick of settling for whichever one we dislike the least!!

Instead of complaining about “losing” votes to independent candidates why don’t they complain about honest votes for their candidate being stolen? There’s a valid reason to be mad. Of course it’s a lot easier to blame the little guy instead. Hence why the Democrats have done absolutely nothing to protest and fight the stolen Presidential elections in 2000 and 2004. Spineless. One in the same. Blame Nader.

The main reason Fitrakis has decided to run for Governor is to bring up issues that neither Republicans nor Democrats will talk about.

Especially the stolen elections and the culture of corruption our country now resides in. He’s running because he is sick of politicians ignoring the real issues and ignoring the country, he wants to use the candidate platform to speak up. We are trillions of dollars in debt. We are fighting an illegal war. We are stomping on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We are allowing our citizens to be homeless, sick, and uncared for. We are allowing Corporations to control EVERYTHING. The world hates us and our war-mongering foreign policy. And people are freaking out about gay marriage and estate taxes?? Fitrakis is running because he’s not in denial about the state of our country and actually has the guts to say what needs to be said.

My conclusion: I know Strickland is a better choice for Governor than Blackwell. Duh. But I’m sick of voting for someone just to block someone else. There will always be a Blackwell running. When do we stop sacrificing our votes? This country should never settle and if I don’t demonstrate that with my vote, how can I ever expect anyone else to? Which is why I am still voting for him, 1% or not.
