In 1904, Debs got 402,400 votes (Theodore Roosevelt winner); in 1908, he garnered 402,820 votes (William H. Taft winner); in 1912, Debs gathered 897,011 votes (Woodrow Wilson winner). All of those ultimate presidents were ‘bigger’ names than any candidate in the current election cycle. Do you think the good folks who cast those votes thought ‘their votes didn’t make a difference?’ Or that Debs had no chance to win?

On 6-16-1918 in Canton, Ohio, Debs gave one of the greatest anti-war speeches in history. Not just US history, but world history. I encourage all of you to read it. He was arrested after his speech under the Espionage Act of 1917 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for using language like this excerpt:

“The master class has always declared the wars; the subject class has always fought the battles. The master class has had all to gain and nothing to lose, while the subject class has had nothing to gain and all to lose-especially their lives.”

In the 1920 presidential election, despite being a prisoner, Debs ran and amassed a staggering 917,799 votes against the eventual winner Warren G. Harding.
