5 years and 4,000 dead soldiers later…

I was tempted, but chose not to write a special post on March 19th regarding the 5-year commemoration of the Iraq war invasion/occupation.

Thinking about it all now, so many powerful songs come to mind, lyrics I could post, videos I could share, books I could quote and recommend. But original thoughts? I feel like I’ve said it all already. My thoughts are still the same, my opinions unwavering. If someone is curious as to what I think about the invasion and occupation of Iraq, I invite you to take a look back at all the anti-war posts I’ve written throughout the years. There are twelve pages worth.

What else can I say? What magical words can I string together that will make people stand up and finally decide they’ve had enough? What else is worth repeating, besides:

May the children and families of all those who have been lost in this senseless and immoral occupation— Americans, Iraqis, soldiers, contractors, and civilians— forgive us for our seemingly ambivalent attitudes and apparent inaction. Know that the deeds of this country’s government do not represent the desires or hearts of this country’s people. War without end? NOT IN MY NAME.

Perhaps I’ll have better luck reaching people by posting the words of one of my heroes, a true champion of PEACE: Congressman Ron Paul. A man who’s been to war. A man who has the wisdom and experience to warrant the attention of every American.

On Five Years in Iraq

Five years ago last week, the US military’s “shock and awe” campaign lit up the Baghdad sky. Five years later, with hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and nearly four thousand Americans dead, we should pause and reflect on just what has been gained and what has been lost.

From the beginning, the march to war was paved with false assumptions and lies. Senior administration officials claimed repeatedly that Iraq was somehow responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001. They claimed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They manipulated the fear of the American people after 9/11 to further a war agenda that they had been planning years before that attack. The mainstream media was complicit in this war propaganda.

Nearly ten years ago, long before 9/11, I requested the time in opposition to the fateful Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, where I then stated on the Floor of the House of Representatives, “I see this piece of legislation as essentially being a declaration of virtual war. It is giving the President tremendous powers to pursue war efforts against a sovereign Nation.” Less than five years later we were invading Iraq.

Bush’s LAST State of the Union Address is tonight @ 9pm

Are you hesitant to risk the ensuing depression of putting yourself through it, but still feel a civic responsibility to tune in? Fear not, my friends, I have the solution: www.DrinkingGame.us

“The general rules of this game are no different from any other drinking game. A drink is either a shot or a good gulp from a beer (or cider). Different events call for different numbers of drinks and all you do is watch the speech and play along. If all goes well, you’ll be unconscious by the time they show the other party’s response.”

Featuring categories such as foreign policy (troops, Israel, Pakistan, “nukular”), general blather (freedom, progress), and domestic policy (stimulus, economy, Homeland.)

* * * Be alert for bonus drink opportunities, like if Bush pronounces “Mahmoud Ahmadinejad” correctly! If he discusses redeploying the troops, that’s when you “redeploy the contents of your beverage into your mouth.” If the camera shows a close-up of Nancy Pelosi (without Bush in the shot) you have to do a shot without moving any of your facial muscles— and other fun bonuses.

I’d like to add my own personal bonus — if Bush says “RON PAUL” at any time, you must immediately finish the entire bottle of whatever you’re drinking. If it’s beer, finish off the case!

Cheers, mateys!

When America Went Fascist

by Chris Rowthorn

“Fascism: a system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator”
- The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language

It is a truism in the blogosphere that one more terrorist attack will turn America into a fascist state. People speculate about what fascism in America will look like, or how they might fight it. Others boast that they plan to flee the country ahead of the coming fascist takeover of the United States. One cannot read these posts without a sense of bitter irony, because one thing is clear to those who are watching carefully:

The United States of America is already a fascist state.

The United States turned fascist on December 11, 2000. On that day, the Supreme Court essentially appointed George W. Bush president of the United States, stopping the recount of Florida votes, and, hence, the democratic process. The justices of the court then slipped away by night, ashamed of their role in murdering America’s great experiment in democratic rule.

The Supreme Court decision of December 11, 2000 is the modern American equivalent to German President Hindenburg’s swearing in of Hitler as chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. By swearing in Hitler as chancellor, Hindenburg set in motion a process which led to the Nazi dictatorship and World War II. In the case of the Nazis, the Reichstag fire of February 27, 1933 was the catalyst they needed to cement their grip on power. In the case of Bush and his backers, the tragedy of September 11, 2001 was the catalyst they needed to complete their full takeover of the American government.

When one looks at present-day America and reads plaintive musings about if and when America will turn fascist, it is useful to ask oneself the following question: When do you think the average German realized that he or she was living under a fascist dictatorship? How about the Japanese or Italians of the same period? Do you think that Hitler, Mussolini or Tojo made a public announcement to the effect of, “Dear Citizens: Please be advised that you no longer have any rights or political power. We have taken control of the government. Opposition and resistance are futile and will be punished.”

The fact is, most of the “good” citizens of these countries clung desperately to the notion that it was business as usual long after constitutional government was dead and buried. Sure, they knew that their governments were a little further to the right than normal, but as long as they kept earning money and eating well, they ignored the grim realities of fascism.

It’s easy to understand why: the “good” citizens weren’t members of officially scapegoated groups or political activists, and thus they never felt the iron fist of fascism. It’s not like the government just suddenly started rounding up people at random and trucking them off to camps and executing them. No, it was only the “bad ones” who were carted off. It was the John Walker Lindhs, the Jose Padillas, the illegal immigrants and the Muslim Americans of their day who were carted off.

In fact, for the average citizen of Germany, Japan or Italy, it was only when the military adventures of their fascist governments started to go seriously awry did the reality dawn on them. Until then, if anything, they merely felt the stirrings of extreme patriotism and perhaps even satisfaction as their countries expanded outward. Indeed, for many, it was only when their countries lay in ashes did they fully understand what had happened. Only then could they see that a kind of cancer had run wild in their countries and come perilously close to destroying them.

In 2007, the average American is in exactly the same position as the typical German, Japanese or Italian citizen of the early to mid-1930s. Unless you happen to be a Muslim, a left-wing political activist, or a regular reader of left-wing political websites or journals, you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s business as usual in the United States of America. You rise in the morning, read the morning paper, commute to work, get a paycheck, hit the ATM and watch the usual shows on television in the evening. Sure, we’re officially “at war” but other than a few news stories and the usual yellow ribbons and bumper stickers, this doesn’t really intrude into our realities.

Ignore your rights… and they’ll go away.

Yesterday’s arrests of anti-war protesters — declared “National Security Threats” — and disgusting display of our police state shows the First Amendment is on its way out. All the more reason to show up and SPEAK OUT on September 15th, while you still can.

The ANSWER coalition, an anti-war group, was holding a press conference yesterday to address the excessive fines they’ve received from DC authorities for their promotion of a September 15th protest. Last month they were fined tens of thousands of dollars for hanging up posters around the city. The alleged crime? Using unapproved adhesive. In actuality, they were using wheat paste, about the most natural and gentle adhesive you can imagine. You may be utterly shocked to also learn that this whole thing started after Fox News called on the DC government to take action against the posters.

Apparently we can’t hold press conferences on public property any more. And if you want to hang up a poster ::gasp:: — watch out! You may be declared a national security threat and trampled by police officers on horseback, apparently necessary to disperse a large crowd of a dozen people, followed by prompt arrest. Who do these protesters think they are, tax payers? American citizens protected by Free Speech rights? Don’t they remember George W. Bush saying the Constitution is just a damned piece of paper?

From A.N.S.W.E.R.:

Three anti-war activists were arrested in front of the White House today after the U.S. Park Police moved to suppress a press conference called to protest the fines and threats against the ANSWER Coalition for putting up anti-war posters promoting the September 15 March and Die-In in Washington DC.

…The press conference became a chaotic scene as U.S. Park Police interrupted the event on the basis that there was no permit for a folding table that was used as a speaker’s stand for media microphones. As U.S. Park Police officers surrounded the group, an officer on horseback rode into the crowd to disperse the media and onlookers…

Who the hell do we think we are — spending billions of dollars every month, killing thousands of our sons & daughters — to occupy “liberate” other countries so they can supposedly enjoy the fruits of democracy, when we aren’t free to exercise our inalienable rights here in Amerika?

They’re quelling dissent by any means necessary now. You think this is bad?

If you want to go even deeper down the rabbit hole, check out Bush’s Executive Order signed in July that nixes the Fourth Amendment for anti-war protesters: “Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq.” Or even worse: National Security Presidential Directive 51, which would essentially suspend the Constitution and make Bush a Dictator in the event of a “Catastrophic Emergency.”

I hate to say it, because people are so damned sensitive to the word — but this is a clear sign of fascism. It reeks of Police State as much as the Comfest incident.

Yeah, I said it. F A S C I S M.

I’m done saying “it’s coming” because clearly it’s already here. Perhaps people should question why they’re so uncomfortable with the word and admit their discomfort is actually plain ole’ cognitive dissonance? It’s their brain saying “hey, you say you love the flag so much, why don’t you stand up and defend the rights it signifies?” I suppose that’s asking too much.

Zogby poll released today – 51% of Americans Want Congress to Probe Bush/Cheney Regarding 9/11 Attacks

Over 30% Seek Immediate Impeachment and 67% also fault 9/11 Commission for not investigating anomalous collapse of World Trade Center 7

Kansas City, MO (Zogby International) September 6, 2007 – As America nears the sixth anniversary of the world-churning events of September 11, 2001, a new Zogby International poll finds a majority of Americans still await a Congressional investigation of President Bush’ and Vice President Cheney’s actions before, during and after the 9/11 attacks. Over 30% also believe Bush and/or Cheney should be immediately impeached by the House of Representatives.

The 911truth.org–sponsored poll also found that over two-thirds of Americans say the 9/11 Commission should have investigated the still unexplained collapse of the 47-story World Trade Center Building 7 at 5:20 p.m. on September 11, 2001.

WTC 7 housed the mayor’s emergency bunker and offices of the SEC, IRS, CIA and Secret Service and was not hit by any planes but still completely collapsed into its own footprint nearly eight hours after the Twin Tower attacks. FEMA did not explain this collapse, the 911 Commission ignored it, and the promised official study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now 2 years overdue.

Janice Matthews, executive director of poll sponsor 911truth.org, observes:

“The supermajority response to the WTC Building 7 question signals an increasing public concern about this remarkable event — up from 38% last year. We can perhaps credit this rising awareness to the millions who have recently witnessed videos or Youtube clips of this skyscraper’s descent and the outspoken demands for a new WTC inquiry from over 150 architects and engineering professionals, including NIST’s own former Fire Science Division Chief, Dr. James Quintiere. Another contributory factor is the increased questioning among Hispanics, Blacks and Asians whose responses appear significantly more critical of the 9/11 Commission than Whites, sometimes twice as critical.”

Strategy aide W. David Kubiak adds,

“While only 32% seek immediate Bush and/or Cheney impeachment based on their current personal knowledge, a clear majority of citizens still seems hungry for a full exposure of the facts. The results suggest widespread public support for legislators like Rep. Dennis Kucinich who pledge to investigate unanswered 9/11 questions in the relevant congressional committees this fall. We hope more of our representatives find the spine to respond to this escalating dissatisfaction with the dubious accounting we have received thus far.”

9/11 family member and 911truth.org advisor Donna Marsh O’Connor notes,

“I’m not sure this poll is at all surprising. Over half of those polled want more answers from Congress, from those they hired to represent them. One quarter of the country knows enough to want to impeach both. Doesn’t it just mean people need figures they consider credible to tell them whether key details add up or not? Truth advocates need to press their case in Congress, on college campuses, in church groups with reason and absolute discipline regarding what can and cannot be proven. The strongest evidence needs to reach the people—including people who hate computers. We must present it calmly. Like whispering so that people reach in to hear.”

Good news, we found the WMDs!

Looks like Bush won’t need that extra $50 billion for Iraq after all! In fact, we can leave Iraq completely, bring all the troops home, and put them to work rebuilding the Gulf Coast because they’ve just found the weapons of mass destruction — turns out the UN had them all along!

I’m reminded of when I look all over the apartment for my sunglasses, only to realize they’ve been on my head the whole time. Kind of the same thing, only three million people don’t die when I make that mistake.

Bush orders Rove not to testify — SHOCKER!

Good luck finding this in the mainstream news. As is usually the case, the latest freak accident couldn’t come at a better time.

I have a funny feeling about this bridge collapse story, that’s for sure. And I’m not alone. When consuming stories like this one happen, that’s when you should pay attention to OTHER events happening, the ones in smaller print. Use your detective skills to find what’s NOT on CNN, what’s on the last page of the newspaper, or what is being bumped completely off the headlines right now.

Like this little gem:

Karl Rove granted executive privilege — real original Mr. Bush!

US President George W Bush has ordered close adviser Karl Rove not to testify before a Senate hearing on the sacking of eight federal prosecutors.

Mr Bush used the executive privilege he has as president to exempt Mr Rove from having to appear.

The US Senate committee is investigating whether the White House arranged the sackings for improper political reasons.

The Bush administration maintains that the dismissals were justified.

“Mr Rove, as an immediate presidential adviser, is immune from compelled congressional testimony about matters that arose during his tenure and that relate to his official duties in that capacity,” White House lawyer Fred Fielding wrote in a letter to Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy, and made available to the Reuters news agency.

Mr Rove had been due to testify at a hearing on Thursday morning, along with another White House aide, deputy political director Scott Jennings.
